Yoga Nidra

Also known as yogic sleep or sleep with awareness, Yoga Nidra is an ancient practice that is rapidly gaining popularity in the West. It is intended to induce full-body relaxation and a deep meditative state of consciousness.   "Yoga Nidra is a systematic method of complete relaxation, holistically addressing our physiological, neurological, and subconscious needs."; Rod Stryker.  During a typical class, we use a variety of techniques—including guided imagery and body scanning—to aid relaxation. Ulike a quick Savasana at the end of asana practice, Yoga Nidra allows enough time for practitioners to physiologically and psychologically sink into it—at least 20 to 45 minutes. Yoga for Trauma Related Stress

I believe it is time to incorporate Yoga in the treatment of PTSD. I offer support by supplying tools that help alleviate stress and tension through movement, breath and meditation. Yoga provides a means for those suffering from PTSD to engage in a very specific practice that is designed to calm, relax, strengthen and heal. While Doctors treat illnesses resulting from PTSD and prescribe medication to temporarily deal with the symptoms. Mental Health Professionals are trained to help stabilize the behavior of those who suffer from PTSD. There is no doubt that Medical and Mental Health professionals offer critical services in the diagnosis and treatment for this at risk population. I believe incorporating yoga into these traditional treatments provides long term benefits to those who suffer from PTSD.
